Brexplainer: Why ‘Brexit’ is the Collins word of the year

The Word Lover’s Blog at Collins has provided a useful Q & A section on why Brexit is their word of the year. It is not surprising that this was the word of the year, with its usage going up by 3600% in 2016. If only the campaign had as much clarity as the Q & A from Collins, we might be looking at an entirely different word of the year. Let’s hope next year it’s not ‘Trumpism’!
Incidentally, I recall my grandfather using the term ‘brexit’ as long ago as the ’80s, but he was referring to breakfast, which would make ‘hard brexit’ toast, I guess.
