The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Board has been under fire on Twitter for using good English. Today, the BBC (propagators of their own formal English, lest ye forget!) ran this mocking article.
While is should be acknowledged that the formality of the register in the above tweet is sky-high, we should also remember that Indian English has a higher number of speakers than British English, is just as dynamic as the UK variety and the formality stems from it being learnt from British ‘high society’ in the dark days of the Raj.
If the BBC want to find amusing nonstandard forms of English being broadcast on the global stage, maybe they should watch their own coverage of the Olympic Games.
